How to issue refunds on Shopify
Open the order in your Shopify admin, click Refund, select the items and quantities being returned, and enter any shipping amount you are refunding. Confirm and Shopify sends the money back through the original payment method. The customer gets an automatic email, and the refund typically reaches their bank in 5 to 10 business days.
Full versus partial refunds
The Refund screen lets you refund the whole order or specific line items and quantities. Partial refunds suit a single returned item from a multi-item order. You can also refund shipping separately by typing the amount into the shipping field.
Restocking inventory
The refund dialog includes a restock checkbox. Leave it checked when the item is coming back to sellable stock so your inventory counts update. Uncheck it for damaged goods or for items you will not resell, and your stock levels stay honest.
What the customer sees
Shopify emails a refund confirmation as soon as you submit. The credit posts to the original payment method; Shopify Payments refunds usually land in 5 to 10 business days depending on the bank. Tell customers that window up front to prevent where-is-my-refund tickets.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I refund to a different card than the one used?
- No. Shopify refunds only go back to the original payment method. If that card is closed, the customer's bank still routes the credit to their account.
- Do I get the transaction fee back on a refund?
- On Shopify Payments in the US, the original processing fee is not returned on refunds. Factor that into your refund policy math.
- Can I cancel a refund after issuing it?
- No. Once submitted, a refund cannot be reversed. If it was a mistake, charge the customer again with their explicit agreement or issue a new draft order invoice.
