Shopify Inventory Management Basics

Shopify tracks inventory per product variant per location when you enable quantity tracking: stock decrements on each sale, products can stop selling or keep selling at zero, and low-stock visibility comes from the inventory report or Flow alerts. Good inventory hygiene is accurate counts, real SKUs, and a weekly reconciliation habit.

Turn tracking on properly

On each product or variant, enable Track quantity and enter the starting count. Choose the out-of-stock behavior deliberately: Stop selling when out of stock for made-to-order or scarce items, continue selling only when you can reliably restock or produce on demand.

Locations and multi-warehouse

If you stock in more than one place (home, storage unit, 3PL), create locations under Settings then Locations and assign inventory to each. Shopify routes fulfillments by priority and lets you transfer stock between locations with a paper trail.

SKUs and barcodes

Give every variant a SKU following a simple scheme you can read at a glance. Add barcodes if you will ever use a scanner, a point of sale, or a 3PL; retrofitting barcodes to a live catalog is miserable.

The weekly habit

Once a week, compare Shopify counts against shelf counts for your top sellers. Drift happens through returns, damages, and manual errors, and small drift becomes overselling. Adjust counts with a note so the history explains itself later.

Frequently asked questions

Can Shopify alert me at low stock?
Not natively by email, but Shopify Flow can send alerts when inventory crosses a threshold, and many inventory apps do it too.
Does Shopify handle bundles and kits?
Not natively as shared-component inventory; bundle apps handle component stock deduction.
How do returns affect inventory?
When processing a return you choose whether items return to stock; damaged goods should not go back into sellable counts.
